Secrets
Any piece of information, knowledge, or object intentionally kept hidden, unexplained, or shared with only a select few.
I went to bed last night with the word in my head, and I had to write about what this word means to me.
I have always been the one out of my friends and some of my family to keep secrets for others who entrusted their secrets with me, but here is the thing about some secrets.
Holding on to secrets that hurt others is not a good thing; to me, it's a trust and loyalty thing.
There is a phrase I heard a lot growing up.
"What happens in this house stays in this house," and the secrets of keeping what happens in a household affect the person that the secret represents.
I kept a secret for years about my domestic abuse, to the point that a lot of my family members didn't know I was being abused.
The cost of those secrets cost me mentally
I feel like sometimes the weight of keeping a secret does more damage than peace.
Secrets can sometimes do more harm than good, so remember to always know you can let a secret out to those you trust enough to keep you safe in sharing that secret.
And letting go of hurt or pain from that secret is okay.
Stay strong and remember people can only do what you allow them to do with your secrets, protect yourself at all times.
